Nobody said being a filmmaker was easy. But for the aspiring director in this sharp satire by the Toronto team behind the micro-budget marvels AMY GEORGE (KCFF 2012) and THE OXBOW CURE (KCFF 2013), making a movie means coping with more confusion and uncertainty than she may be able to bear. Stuck with the task of trying to make something coherent out of her botched thesis film, Rene (Jennifer Hardy CK) also has to weather the often dubious advice she gets from a variety of would-be male mentors, as played by actual members of Toronto’s film community, including director Albert Shin and critic Adam Nayman. (The inimitable Matt Johnson appears in a hilarious cameo, too.) Mixing vignettes starring the hapless Rene with scenes from her very odd movie, directors Calvin Thomas and Lev and Yonah Lewis have concocted a very original and often delightful comedy about the many perils of the creative process.
