The Oscar-nominated director of REBELLE a.k.a. WAR WITCH (KCFF 2013), Montreal’s Kim Nguyen confirms his status as one of Canada’s most accomplished and adventurous filmmakers with what may be his boldest effort to date. A smart and gripping drama set in the cutthroat worlds of high finance and high tech, THE HUMMINGBIRD PROJECT is most definitely the director’s starriest too. Jesse Eisenberg and Alexander Skarsgard play two very different cousins who put their careers and lives on the line for a get-very-rich-quick scheme that involves the nigh-impossible task of installing a fibre-optic cable from Kansas to New Jersey in order to give them an edge over competitors on news of transactions on the New York Stock Exchange. Salma Hayek co-stars as a Wall Street exec who’s one of many very formidable obstacles in between the dogged duo and their goals in this sharply executed and wickedly entertaining parable about big money and blind ambition.
Kim Nguyen is a Montreal-born director and screenwriter. He graduated from Concordia University in Montreal with a BFA and earned an MA in cinematography from the Université de Montréal. His 2012 feature-length film REBELLE was Canada’s entry for the Best Foreign Feature Film at the Oscars, and was the top winner at the first Canadian Screen Awards. Since being nominated for an Oscar, Nguyen’s career has been on fire. His rapid-fire pace is in stark contrast to most Canadian directors, who often spend years between projects, frequently delayed by the slow process of generating financing from the country’s public film funders. Nguyen had built up a solid career ici with a trio of French-language films — LA MARIS, TRUFFE AND LA CITÉ — but after garnering that Hollywood heat, he began writing and directing bigger-budget English films with well-known actors. THE HUMMINGBIRD PROJECT is his latest feature.
