Your Tomorrow

From its opening in 1971 to its recent closure as part of a controversial redevelopment plan, Ontario Place always meant something more than just a series of parks, venues and one big dome at Toronto’s lakeside. Through its early heyday, it served as a sort of utopian ideal of public space in Canada. Filmmaker Ali Weinstein captures the sad end to that dream in a documentary that was shot during Ontario Place’s final year of operations. By contrasting the experiences and perspectives of staff members and visitors with archival images of the park in happier and more hopeful times, her film invites viewers to ponder what was and what could’ve been, yet moments of warmth and wry humour continually alleviate the poignant tone.
