One of this country’s most daring and most celebrated directors, Clement Virgo (BROTHER – KCFF2024) returns with what may be his boldest and most original film to date. Merging expressionistic fairy tale, erotically charged thriller, and provocative allegory, STEAL AWAY tells the story of two young women – Fanny (Angourie Rice) and Cécile (Mallori Johnson) – who develop a fierce bond during tumultuous events taking place at a manor house that serves as a haven for refugees. The truth about Fanny’s home and her seemingly altruistic mother Florence (Lauren Lee Smith) is just one aspect of the darker reality at the core of Virgo’s film, which is remarkable for both its steely intelligence and the feverish intensity the filmmaker creates using every element at his disposal.
