As the main character and creator of this raucous mockumentary, Cree actor and filmmaker Cody Lightning proves he will do anything for a laugh. He’s especially ruthless when it comes to sending up the cliches and conventions that Indigenous performers know all too well. Lightning plays a highly exaggerated version of himself, a fame-hungry performer still clinging to the very modest amount of recognition he earned as a young cast member of Smoke Signals, the 1998 film that broke ground for its foregrounding of Indigenous characters in American indie cinema. His quest to make a sequel becomes a personal odyssey full of hilarious mishaps and delusions of grandeur. With many of his original cast mates coming along for the ride – including Gary Farmer and Adam Beach – Lightning mines this premise to create one of the year’s most fearless comedies.
