Details
Adapted from the book and play by Kate Hewlett and with terrific songs by Tim Williams, this second feature by Toronto’s Lindsay MacKay tells a funny, poignant and sometimes deeply moving story of loves lost and found. The Australian star of the TV drama Rectify, Adelaide Clemens plays Carey, a young woman who’s torn between her feelings for her husband Simon (Patrick J. Adams) and Owen (Douglas Smith), a bookstore clerk. As the full details of Carey’s situation become clearer, so do the film’s hard-won lessons about heartbreak, forgiveness and resilience. The musical sequences pack a similar wallop in MacKay’s unconventional but immensely engaging movie, which also includes a remarkable and all-too-rare appearance by the great Kathleen Turner as Simon’s mother.
