Whether it’s because of the humour and poignancy it contains or the delectable confections it presents on screen, this East Coast drama will surely make the same impression on viewers that its real-life inspiration did on everyone who heard the story. Jonathan Keijser’s first feature is based on the true story of a Syrian family who lost their chocolate business when they had to flee the civil war and who were able to start anew in their new home in Antigonish, N.S. As it was for the real family, there are many challenges on this journey for the clan headed by Issam Hadhad (played by Hatem Ali, who sadly passed away after filming was completed). Yet the movie’s sweetness and warmth is undeniable.
