While there may not be much hopefulness to be found in real stories of the climate emergency and the countless species at risk of extinction, director Nadine Pequeneza’s documentary demonstrates that positive change is always possible. She brings viewers deep into efforts by scientists, activists and other protectors of ocean life to preserve the population of North Atlantic right whales, which had been decimated by centuries of hunting and is now threatened by ship collisions and lethal injuries from fishing gear. With its stunning cinematography, Pequeneza’s film turns this fight for survival into a powerfully immersive viewing experience, one that shows audiences that we humans have so much more to do for this planet than give in to despair.
