Winner of the Grande Prix at Cannes, and Canada’s submission for Best Foreign Language Film in the 2017 Oscar Awards, It’s Only The End of the World is Xavier Dolan’s latest work.
Based on the play Juste la fin du monde by French playwright Jean-Luc Lagarce, the film tells the story of a young writer (Gaspard Ulliel) who returns to his hometown to announce his impending death. It’s the proverbial prodigal’s return, except that Louis’ family is not so ready to forgive him for his desertion. His arrival precipitates chaos. His mother (Nathalie Baye) has tried to keep her family together despite their struggles in the wake of Louis’ departure, and his loud, tempestuous siblings Antoine and Suzanne (Vincent Cassel and Léa Seydoux) and introverted sister-in-law Catherine (Marion Cotillard) have their own crosses and grudges to bear.
The film deals with the universal subject of family that, as Dolan himself has stated, is a place“where we speak of our love for each other through our never-ending quarrels, and where, in spite of ourselves, we shout about our resentments, the expression of doubt and solitude.”
